Planning staff asked the Planning Commission to schedule a public hearing for a proposed sign ordinance amendment to permit permanent ground‑mounted "large flag signs" on lots of 20 acres or greater in heavy industrial, light industrial or park zones.
Teresa Stevens, the city’s sign administrator, described the proposal: one large ground‑mounted flag sign per qualifying lot, separate from other permitted wall or ground flag signs; maximum area of 4,000 square feet (roughly 40 ft by 100 ft); a 200‑foot setback from property boundaries and overhead utilities; a fall zone fully contained on the lot; and a maximum pole height of 150 feet. Stevens said the sign may have indirect illumination but must not glare onto other properties.
Commissioners clarified that the change would allow flag signs that are not necessarily American flags and asked whether a pictorial example was available; staff said the sign is defined in the flag ordinance as "a sign made of a flexible material . . . which is hoisted on a flagpole" and that the staff recommended scheduling a Jan. 7 public hearing.
Next steps: public hearing on Jan. 7 to receive comment on the proposed code change and its operational and visual standards.
