The Bexley Tree Commission voted to approve a proposed gateway planting plan for College Avenue just north of Livingston, endorsing a design that adds columnar trees, layered shrubs and larger annual beds intended to strengthen the city’s gateway identity.
Designers said the plan expands existing planting footprints, introduces columnar trees approximately 20–30 feet tall, adds rows of boxwoods and taxus for screening, and proposes a 15-by-35-foot annual bed intended for seasonal color. The design also includes steps to address longstanding drainage problems in the area.
"We wanted to have enough of an area that it didn't look like it's a gateway that you're actually coming through," a designer presenting the plan said, describing the geometry and visual intent for drivers approaching the city.
Commission staff and members discussed maintenance and public safety concerns, particularly visibility and the need to coordinate with adjacent property owners (including a Speedway and an automotive shop) about existing access and any required agreements. Walter recommended approval "as presented," with a few follow-up items for staff to resolve.
A motion to approve the design subject to Walter’s review and any necessary coordination with property owners was moved, seconded and carried. The chair announced the recorded vote in favor: Jordan, Celeste, Audra, Mary, Linda, Sheila, the chair, and Susan.
Next steps include staff follow-up with property owners to confirm maintenance and access expectations and minor refinements arising from Walter's review.
