Geary County commissioners voted to prioritize a set of regional tourism trade shows for 2026 and asked the county's CVV director to return with a tighter, six-month plan and detailed costs.
Raquel Singo, CVV director, presented a full-year list of proposed trade shows and marketing opportunities, including the Denver International Sportsman Show, an Omaha show, an Oklahoma City outdoor event and the Wichita women's fair. Singo said the CVV has preregistered for three outdoor shows and that the Denver event requires early confirmation because of timing. "I don't anticipate you guys approving all of them," Singo said, noting she had supplied the full list to give the commissioners options.
After discussion about budget and return on investment, one commissioner moved to prioritize nearby, regional trade shows (Denver, Omaha, Oklahoma City and Wichita); another commissioner seconded the motion. The board approved the motion by voice vote. Commissioners asked Singo to present a short-term (six-month) attendance recommendation showing costs, expected staff time and measurable outreach goals before the CVV pays for any registrations.
Singo also reviewed a proposed three-year renewal for two larger billboards on county routes (one near the Manhattan exit/Sapp Brothers and one downtown). The vendor's monthly renewal schedule showed year-over-year increases (listed as $4.35 in 2026, $4.55 in 2027 and $4.75 in 2028). Commissioners asked Singo to renegotiate with the vendor to keep rates level for a three-year term or to seek clarification on the increases before signing a contract.
Finance director Tammy Robinson told the board that smaller, one-off tribal LATCF funds totaling $13,083.28 remain available for eligible projects and reminded commissioners that ARPA accounting had been officially closed out.
Next steps: Singo will return with a six-month travel/attendance recommendation and revised pricing or contract language for the billboards. The board did not approve the billboard contract today and directed continued negotiation.
