City Administrator Andrew Parker and staff presented a progress report on the John Davis Recreation Center renovation, the largest active SPLOST-funded capital project in the city's portfolio. Parker said the project is "about 70% complete" and that the expected completion date is March 2026.
The renovated facility will retain the 1980s portion of the building for administrative offices while replacing older sections from the 1950s and 1960s. Parker said the project will provide a new basketball gym with seating "for over 370," meeting rooms that can be subdivided, and a new pool-access building with locker rooms and restrooms. He noted the project suffered several design and construction setbacks because the new work physically connects to the older structure.
Parker also highlighted a value-add: an indoor climbing wall with a belay system and different difficulty levels, and said staff expect rec commission members visited the site to review progress. Staff stressed the facility will be versatile and will continue to serve as a voting precinct in one of the downstairs rooms.
