The DeSoto County Schools board recognized multiple individual and team state champions in swimming and cross country, with principals and coaches introducing athletes and organizing group photos.
At the start of the Dec. 4 board meeting the DeSoto County Schools board paused regular business to recognize several fall state athletic champions.
Principal Shane Jones introduced Akiah (Kya) Robinson, a multi-year state swim champion who won the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly titles this season. Jacob Strickland, principal of Olive Branch High School, and coach Gunny Sergeant McInnis introduced cross-country standout Megan Johnson and praised her athletic improvement and scholastic achievement. Principal Dwayne Case and coaches introduced members of a girls cross-country team that won the state title and noted that several runners were unavailable because of scheduling conflicts, but that a group photo would be taken.
Board members thanked coaches, principals and families and invited the student-athletes and their guests to remain for the board meeting or leave after recognition. A group photo followed the remarks.
