Willows council authorizes up to $12,000 for new library technology including a 3D printer

The Willows City Council on Dec. 9 authorized the city manager or her designee to purchase new library technology using library development impact mitigation fees in an amount not to exceed $12,000.
Christine, the city librarian, told council the library—s existing technology is outdated and that prior 3D printers were unsupported or in unclear working condition. "It will be interesting to see if the two that I just found still function," she said, stressing the need to buy equipment from a manufacturer with sustained product support. The planned purchase includes monitors that will serve as program displays and a single new 3D printer plus a laptop capable of running the printer and a laser cutter.
Council members praised the library—s reorganization and the proposed investment in technology, noting the children's librarian position and improved programming. The authorization passed 3–0.
Staff said the purchase will be implemented to maximize public programming while being mindful of equipment placement and environmental factors that affect 3D printer performance (temperature and storage of filament).
