Hardin County Schools presented a transportation update at the board meeting, reporting current operations, staffing numbers and a phased rollout of a parent-facing bus tracking tool.
The transportation director said the district is traveling about 17,900 miles per day across roughly 601 active routes, and that number will rise when preschool routing increases. "On a given day, a good average this year is about 185," the director said when asked how many buses are in service.
Staff reported about 190 drivers and 65 monitors on payroll and said they recently hired three drivers with another testing session and training class beginning next week. The presenter said some spare vehicles exist (roughly 25 extra buses, for an equipment total near 210–215), though several spares need parts before they can be pressed into service.
The district is also rolling out a "stop finder" app to families in phases. The director described the appcurrently in use in a section of College Viewallowing parents to set a radius and receive alerts when a bus enters that area; the district plans wider preschool rollout with a target to have the app available district-wide by January.
Board members asked follow-up questions about capacity and driver recruitment; transportation staff said routes are covered and that midday runs and program routes have increased workload. Staff said adjustments to routes will continue after Labor Day when ridership stabilizes.
The board expressed appreciation for transportation staff and drivers for the smooth start to the school year.
