Torrington fire chief: four vacancies, east-side station work moving forward

Fire Chief Tripp told the Board of Public Safety on Dec. 3 that Torrington's fire department currently has four openings after a recent departure to Bristol.
"We lost a firefighter to Bristol. His last day was November 22. So that leaves us with 4 openings," Tripp said, and described a competitive hiring environment as nearby towns recruit certified candidates. He said an application period is open through Dec. 9 and he will attend a Dec. 5 graduating class to recruit new hires. "Right now, currently, there's 3 applicants that I was told that are are qualified to meet this process out of the 12," Tripp added.
Tripp also outlined facilities work related to east-side station coverage: meetings with the director of public works and the WPCA over a sewer project tie-in, deputy chief meetings with the facilities director, and the need for minor renovations for staff safety. He said a building committee will be established and that he expects to have "hard numbers" on manpower and station costs by Jan. 8 when the budget process begins.
The board accepted the fire chief's October reports. Deputy chief later described apparatus repairs: Engine 5 waiting for manufactured pulleys for ladder repair and Engine 2 awaiting a seal kit; both repairs expected by Christmas.
