At its Dec. 9 business meeting, the Hampton Bays Union Free School District recognized three "Students of the Month," celebrated the girls varsity volleyball season and honored two long-serving educators who announced retirement.
HAMPTON BAYS, N.Y. — The Hampton Bays Union Free School District board opened its Dec. 9 business meeting by recognizing students and staff before turning to routine business.
Mister Meyer introduced second-grader Imogen Gigner as the elementary school’s November Student of the Month, praising her “kindness, creativity and love of learning,” and noting her interest in art and math. "We are proud of recognizing her as student of the month for exemplifying the values of our school community," Meyer said.
At Hampton Bays Middle School, Mister Shug introduced Daniella Perez as the middle-school Student of the Month, noting her course load (biology, algebra, and a high-school French class), participation in band and soccer, leadership roles and college aspirations. Shug said he used a translation device so Perez’s parents could follow in Spanish.
Mr. Morgan recognized a high-school student named in the record as Yanela (transcript has alternate spellings) for continuing a full day–and–evening academic schedule and for selection to the Angelo del Toro Puerto Rican and Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute. Morgan said the student pursues postsecondary training and work at BOCES.
Athletics also received applause: Mr. Foster asked the girls varsity volleyball team to come forward and congratulated the squad for a 14–5 overall season and a playoff berth, and he listed several players who earned league honors. Foster also noted the district awarded "scholar-athlete" team recognition to multiple teams that met the district’s academic threshold.
The board then honored two retirees. Mister Meyer summarized the career of Dominique DiMaggio, describing her roles from computer-room teacher to fourth-grade teacher and her recent work in math intervention and RTI. Mister Shug delivered a tribute to Kathy Algeri, recalling her early volunteer work, decades in local classrooms, service to English-language learners, and contribution to the district’s MTSS efforts.
The recognitions and retirements concluded before the board took a short recess and resumed business.
