Danvers HRIC extends grant deadline, plans MLK event and explores community fridge pilot

At its Nov. 20 meeting the Town of Danvers Human Rights and Inclusion Committee outlined several near‑term program items and community partnerships.
Dr. Desmond, speaking for the HRIC grant review team, said the committee opened a grant application process in October and extended the deadline to Dec. 6. He encouraged residents with ideas that align with the HRIC’s mission to apply and said himself and two colleagues would review submissions.
Karen provided an update on Danvers’ 27th annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, which the committee plans to hold on Jan. 19 with student artwork, music from Vocal Alliance and a youth/adult engagement component. The committee invited additional volunteers to join planning and said further details will be posted on social media and the town/HRIC websites.
The committee also announced the annual menorah lighting on Dec. 15 and requested weekday volunteers; staff said the town could cover some dates but weekday help from community members is needed. Members discussed the idea of community fridges to reduce stigma for people accessing food; the library has expressed initial interest but would require trustee approval and DPW sign‑off for any site installation.
Dee, the select board liaison, reported the select board had approved the HRIC’s banner requests for next year and reiterated select board support for the committee’s work. Committee members said they would share grant information at local grocery stores with a QR code to encourage applications.
