Student-leaders, committee present "Portrait of a Learner" framework to trustees

Members of the Portrait of a Learner committee presented the board with a district-crafted learner profile intended as a "north star" for curriculum and instruction.

Presenters including community contributors, educators and student representative Haley Warren described a year-long, inclusive process that gathered input from roughly 60–80 participants across the county. The profile identifies competencies (knowledge, skills and dispositions) intended to be integrated across grades. "Our learner profile will be the North Star that guides every decision we make," a presenter said during the discussion.

Student board member Haley Warren, who participated in the committee, told trustees she could see the competencies embedded in student activities today and asked how the district will "sneak it into everything" so students experience the competencies across subjects. Committee members said the next step is convening teacher groups to draft learning progressions by grade level; those progressions will return to the board for review before full implementation.

Trustees praised the collaborative process and urged the community to continue engagement as the district moves toward implementation. The board asked administrators to bring the learning progressions forward in the coming months.

The presentation included examples of where the competencies already appear in extracurricular activities such as Academic Olympics and student council, and presenters emphasized the need for community buy-in to keep the profile responsive as technology and workforce needs evolve.
