Laredo — Community partners and coalition members used the Suicide Prevention Committee meeting to coordinate outreach for the 988 crisis line, distribute a PSA for broadcast, and advance volunteer LOSt‑team training.
Chair encouraged members to attend a Friday 988 awareness rally at Delmar and I. Pearson and said the committee had recorded short personal PSA messages now scheduled to run on the group's Facebook and offered to share the PSA with local TV and radio. "988 is daylight time," the chair said, and repeatedly urged: "If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 right now." Members recommended distributing the message in schools and at local events to reach young people.
Volunteers and partner agencies reported on community programs and training. Rosina Silva, an AHEC volunteer, urged committee members to lobby councilmembers for local treatment capacity: "We need a wing somewhere," she said, explaining that patients currently travel to San Antonio for care. Members described plans to form a LOSt team (volunteer responders trained to provide outreach and support) and to use established protocols rather than reinvent procedures; the group said this would be the first LOSt training in South Texas.
Partner agencies described services and referral options, including college‑based TimelyCare for students, a new youth crisis outreach team, and a 24/7 regional crisis line. The committee asked volunteers and agencies to post 988 materials in waiting rooms and agreed to coordinate outreach across council districts.
Next procedural steps: distribute the PSA to media, continue volunteer LOSt training planning and pursue council advocacy for local behavioral‑health capacity.
