The Temple ISD Board of Trustees voted to approve administration—s recommendation to proceed with a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) process and contract documents for a staged renovation of the Temple High School cafeteria and kitchen.
During the presentation, Board member Mr. Boyd described the scope as a "complete redesign and relocation of the kitchen" and said the plan will connect the main cafeteria with the ninth-grade cafeteria to create a single centralized kitchen and "have the majority of line services" in one location. Stantec served as lead designer on the project and American Constructors submitted the recommendation letter included in the board packet.
The administration told the board it had identified potential value-engineering options that "would ultimately lower the total cost" by about $300,000 if accepted; the meeting record and packet were cited for specific proposal details. The transcripted numeric figure for the full GMP in the public record was unclear; the administration said contract documents and the proposal letter in the board materials contain the stated total.
Officials said work is expected to begin during the Christmas break and the full renovation will be staged over roughly three semesters, with overall completion taking about a year and a half. Presenters emphasized staging and alternative plans to minimize disruption to students and the nutrition services operation.
Board members moved and seconded the recommendation on the record and approved the action by voice/show-of-hands vote.
Next steps listed by district staff included finalizing contract documents with the selected contractor, coordinating staging and alternate meal service plans with campus administration, and returning to the board with any contract amendments or value-engineering selections. The administration said any unspent contingency or allowances would be returned to the district.
