Architect and facilities staff updated the board on construction of new Del Norte and Heizer middle schools, projected completion timing (Del Norte May 2027; Heizer June 2027/June 2028 references), phased demolition and athletic field sequencing, and other campus projects and donations.
Architect RJ Lopez of Park Hill and district facilities staff gave the board a construction update on major projects including Del Norte Middle School and Heizer Middle School.
Lopez presented site maps and photographs showing poured concrete, steel work and road access. He said Del Norte's notice to proceed was March 2025 and estimated substantial completion for Del Norte in May 2027; he described Heizer as a mirrored floor plan with phased construction and projected substantial completion in June 2027 (the presentation also referenced a June 2028 phase for later site work). The presenters explained that phasing allows the district to keep the existing schools operating while new buildings are built and that athletic field construction will occur in phase 2 after demolition of the older buildings.
Facilities staff reported progress on other projects: HVAC and electrical upgrades at Taylor and Mills, Coronado interior door replacement to begin the next day, major renovations at Watson Stadium and an indoor multipurpose facility beginning Dec. 1, and security camera/tree trimming work to improve camera sightlines. Donations and local support noted included a playground donation for Tyler Elementary and a batting cage at Veterans Stadium donated by Commissioner Tyson Pierce.
Board members and the architect said the projects remain on schedule and that staff will continue coordination with the Public School Facilities Authority (PSFA) and other partners. The board was told PSFA staffing and scheduling remain fluid and that the district has advocated for adequate special education space during design reviews.
