Board approves new middle‑school courses including agriculture and combined creative-writing/journalism

The Rock Hill School Board voted 7–0 on Nov. 11 to approve a slate of proposed middle-school course additions and modifications for the 2026–27 school year.
Alicia Johnson, the district's executive director for secondary education, presented the proposals developed after middle-school counselor and principal input earlier this fall. Sullivan Middle School requested Introduction to Agriculture 7 and 8 to introduce agricultural science, technology and marketing concepts. Saluda Trail Middle School proposed combining creative writing and journalism into a one‑semester course titled Creative Voices: Writing and Journalism and asked to integrate robotics 6–7 into engineering courses so students receive a stronger engineering foundation with robotics as the application.
Johnson said the course proposals followed district policy requiring board approval for new or modified courses, and she described the timeline of counselor and principal review in September and October. Miss Harris moved to approve the recommendations; Mr. Florence seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Board members thanked staff and principals for the work and noted the changes are intended to broaden student exposure to career pathways and applied STEM and agricultural learning. The approved changes will be implemented through school scheduling and teacher assignments for 2026–27.
