District safety director outlines drills, cameras, red bags and partnerships

Andrew Jones, executive director of safety and emergency management for Rock Hill School District, gave a comprehensive update Aug. 12 about the district—s preparedness and safety work, including training, equipment and interagency partnerships.
Jones said the department name change to "safety and emergency management" is intended to improve eligibility for grants and programs. He described a multiagency active-assailant exercise conducted with the Rock Hill Police Department that involved more than 100 district volunteers, and he said the district achieved 100% compliance on required safety drills for the year.
Among planned or completed capital and equipment items, Jones said the district is "looking at adding over 400 new cameras to our sites" and is upgrading camera servers to expand storage capacity. He also said impact-resistant film has been installed this summer at front vestibules, OSHA-compliant first-aid kits will be placed in district vehicles, and every classroom and office now has a "red bag" with emergency supplies.
Jones described expanded safety-screening protocols, random canine sweeps in partnership with local law enforcement, and eligibility to receive intelligence from the SLED Fusion Center as an emergency-management agency. He said several grants supported recent purchases and that the district plans to apply for more funds for access control upgrades and labeling systems.
Trustees thanked Jones for the work and asked staff to share opportunities for additional grant funding. Jones said he would welcome suggestions and partnership leads from board members or staff.
