The Forest Lake Public School District board voted Thursday to close open enrollment for K–12 for the remainder of the 2025–26 school year, with limited exceptions for transfers from local charter or private schools, homeschool families who move into the district, and students who relocate into district boundaries.
Doctor Massey told the board the district previously welcomed open‑enrollment students earlier in the year but that continuing to accept new nonresident students now would place an "ongoing strain" on the system amid current enrollment numbers and upcoming boundary changes for the 2026–27 school year. "Accepting new students through open enrollment creates an ongoing strain at this time of year," Doctor Massey said during the finance/staff welfare portion of the meeting.
The board moved and seconded the recommendation and voted 'aye.' Chair recorded the motion as carrying; no opposing votes were recorded on the transcript.
The district clarified that the closure does not apply to students transferring from local charter or private schools, homeschool families who move into the district, or students who move into the district residence during the school year.
