Regents adopt bylaws for Center for Intellectual Freedom after advisory review; AAUP questions tenure process addressed

The Iowa Board of Regents approved bylaws for the Center for Intellectual Freedom after an advisory committee review. Board Executive Director Mark Braun told the regents the bylaws are materially the same as the version presented in November and that the advisory committee had approved them.
During discussion, Regent Hensley and Regent Dunkel noted a respectful letter from the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) raising concerns about how tenure would operate in the new center’s context. Mark Braun and Regent Hensley said the board remains the entity that grants tenure and that any recommendations for tenured faculty from the center would still come before the board for action.
Regent Hensley moved approval, Regent Kramer seconded and the board took a roll-call vote in which several regents recorded yes votes; the motion carried.
