District nutrition staff told the board Broadview became a CEP school (free meals for all students), reported slightly lower lunch counts year-to-year largely due to one fewer school day, outlined a summer 'one-day pickup' plan at Franklin County High School, and noted the district donated 63,954 meals via a pizza-program partnership.
A member of the district nutrition staff presented the board with participation trends and program changes in the school nutrition program.
The presenter said the high school serving area was renovated and new furniture will be installed Dec. 29. She reported that Broadview Elementary recently qualified for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which gives every student the option of breakfast or lunch at no cost.
"This is one of our CEP schools, so every child has the option of having breakfast or lunch at no cost," the nutrition staff member said. The presenter told the board that lunch participation this November was slightly behind last November, in part because the district had one fewer instructional day and an enrollment decline of roughly 200 students compared with last year.
Participation in after-school meal programs "jumped tremendously," the presenter said, more than doubling compared with the prior year. The district plans to offer summer feeding in June and July using a one-day-per-week pick-up model: families would pick up seven breakfasts and seven lunches at Franklin County High School to cover the week.
The presenter also said the district participated in the Smart Mouth Pizza Program (a fundraising/partnership program) and that proceeds helped the district donate 63,954 meals to charities including No Kid Hungry and Feeding America.
Board members did not take formal action on the nutrition presentation; follow-up items included requalification work for four schools that must reapply for CEP status and monitoring attendance and direct-certified counts on April 1 for requalification determinations.
