At its Dec. 7 meeting the Superior Common Council approved a set of routine and committee-recommended items after appointing Robert Pierce to the 8th District seat.
Key votes and outcomes
- Minutes: Council approved the Nov. 16 regular meeting minutes (motion carried).
- Assistant fire chief job description: The Human Resources committee recommended approval of a job description for an assistant fire chief (to be posted and filled by July); council approved the recommendation without discussion.
- Nonunion wages: Council approved a 2% wage increase for nonunion wage plans, effective Jan. 1, 2022. Councilor Ginny Van Sickle stated she would abstain; the motion carried.
- Finance committee recommendations: The council approved multiple finance committee recommendations, including purchasing a golf simulator for the municipal golf course (expected to open in January with an estimated three-year payback) and continuing negotiations with a neighboring village for fire coverage as a contract expires Dec. 31.
- Election inspector roster: Council approved the roster for the 2022–2023 cycle. Officials said parties submit lists under state law and that, for this cycle, all inspector candidates will undergo conviction-focused background checks.
- Traffic ordinance: Council adopted an ordinance amending City Code chapter 112, schedule J, to add an accessible parking sign at 904 Oaks Avenue (the transcript contained an initial number of 908 that was corrected to 904 during discussion).
- Comprehensive plan: Council set a public hearing to review the City of Superior 2040 comprehensive plan update as introduced by the Planning/Economic Development director.
Most items passed with little debate. Several other committee reports and updates were provided during the meeting, and the council adjourned after asking members to forward any committee appointment suggestions for the newly seated councilor.
Votes not recorded by name: Some motions were recorded as “motion carries” without roll-call tallies in the transcript. The appointment vote was the only item with an explicit roll-call tally recorded (4–4) and a mayoral tie-breaking vote.
