The Mount Pleasant City Council unanimously approved two budget amendments Tuesday allowing the Mount Pleasant Public Library to spend awarded grants from the Simmons Foundation and the American Library Association.
Library staff said the $10,000 Simmons Foundation grant will fund community math programs on Pi Day (March 14), Infinity Day (Aug. 8) and Fibonacci Day (Dec. 23). "We were one of the libraries that applied and were awarded this grant, and we're very excited," a library representative said.
Separately, staff presented a $20,000 grant from the ALA 'Libraries Transform Communities' program that was received in the prior fiscal year but not included in this year's budget. The library said those funds will be used to make building adjustments to improve handicap accessibility and other modifications to better serve patrons.
Council members praised library staff for securing grants. Both budget amendments (ordinance 2025‑2023 for the Simmons grant and ordinance 2025‑26 for the ALA grant) were moved, seconded and approved unanimously.
Library staff and finance staff will proceed with the approved spending and report back as required by grant terms.
