Fridley board approves low bids for middle school renovation

A majority of the Fridley Public School District board voted to approve low bids for a planned renovation at Fridley Middle School that will include repairs to the pool, locker rooms and window replacements.
Board members voted to award work to the contractors listed in the district bid tabulation: Vericon Incorporated as general contractor for $2,393,000; Craft Mechanical for $1,222,900 (mechanical); Retrofit for $208,000 (electrical); and UHL for $73,250 (controls). Facilities staff told the board the solicitation drew 13 bids overall and that UHL was the only bidder for the controls work.
The bid tabulation was presented by district facilities staff before the board voted. As the facilities lead described it, the recommended firms are local and have a positive track record with the district and its project-management group. A board member moved to approve the tabulation, a colleague seconded the motion and it passed by voice vote.
Why it matters: The approved contracts start a multi-category renovation intended to complete the middle-school pool and related infrastructure before the next school year. The district’s choice of local contractors and the presence of multiple bids in three of four categories informed staff’s recommendation.
Votes at a glance: The meeting also included several routine but formal actions. Earlier the board approved the meeting agenda by voice vote. The board adopted a resolution to consolidate an off-cycle polling place at the Fridley Community Center by roll call (recorded ayes from each member present). The consent agenda — covering new contracts, personnel actions and retirements — was approved by voice vote.
What’s next: Staff said bid documents and the recommended awardees are in the board packet and that the district will proceed with contract execution and scheduling. No start date for construction was provided at the meeting.
