The Long Beach City Council carried the consent calendar Dec. 16 after hearing public comment on several items. The consent motion covered items 1–14, with item 6 pulled for separate consideration; the council recorded an affirmative roll-call vote and the motion carried.
During public comment Rogelio Martinez questioned item 8, saying the city was budgeting “upwards to $10,000,000 to decommission a renewable power plant” and asked how the city arrived at that figure. Martinez warned that an open-ended budget could lead to “writing open checks” and called the projected $9,800,000 figure “not normal.”
Another commenter, Dave, sought assurance the city is committed to decommissioning the facility and asked whether the $1,000,000 set aside for continuing operations was an ongoing expenditure; he also asked the city to confirm plans for meeting the long-term obligations of SB 1383.
The council proceeded to a roll-call vote after public comment and carried the consent calendar unanimously. The item remains on the council’s agenda record; staff responses and any follow-up on the detailed decommissioning rationale and SB 1383 obligations were not resolved in the meeting and may be expected to return to committee or staff correspondence.
Public documents attached to the agenda list the consent items and staff reports; the council did not change the consent motion on the floor.
