A speaker identified as Mary Kay told the Frontier Central School District board that the recent audit report showed two material deficiencies, including material audit adjustments of $4,900,000 in the general fund and what she characterized as budget overspending of more than $2,600,000 for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025. She said the unassigned fund balance is reported as zero and urged the board and administration to tighten financial controls and monitoring.
Superintendent Christopher J. Swiatek responded during his report that the district is in a healthy financial position. Swiatek told the board the district maintains over $30,000,000 in fund balances, noted the capital project fund is maximized and said prudent pay-down of debt service helped create capacity for the Shield Project financing. Audit and finance committee chairs told the board an audit-management action plan is underway and that required documents were filed with the state before deadlines.
Why it matters: Audit adjustments and budget variances can affect borrowing capacity, budget planning and public confidence. The board's finance and audit committees are scheduled to continue oversight and implement corrective steps recommended by auditors.
What the board did: Committee chairs reported on a special audit meeting and an action plan; the board accepted business-management reports and approved budget calendar items for the 2026 budget cycle.
Next steps: The audit committee and the business office will continue work on the action plan; the board scheduled additional finance/budget presentations in the coming months during the budget-development season.
