Kenai schedules Dec. 17 work session to decide uses for Challenger Learning Center building

Kenai — The City of Kenai will hold a council work session on Dec. 17 to discuss possible uses for the Challenger Learning Center building at 9711 Kenai Spur Highway after the lease with the Alaska Center for Space and Technology (the Challenger Learning Center) was mutually terminated.
City Manager Kevin Eubank told the council the lease terminated and the city took possession on Nov. 15. Staff will introduce an ordinance at the next council meeting to provide supplemental funding to keep heat and lights on in the building as an unbudgeted expense. Eubank requested a Dec. 17 work session at 5:00 p.m. to discuss options and direction for future use.
Council agreed to the Dec. 17 meeting time. Staff will prepare background information and funding requests for the council work session.
Next steps: Administration will introduce a supplemental funding ordinance at the next council meeting and staff will present options and cost estimates at the Dec. 17 work session.
