Walnut Creek council honors former mayor Gwen Regalia with proclamation and remembrances

The Walnut Creek City Council opened its Dec. 2 meeting with a proclamation honoring the life and public service of former mayor Gwen Regalia, who died Nov. 17 at age 92.
Mayor Cindy Darling read a detailed proclamation highlighting Regalia’s years of service — beginning as a fourth-grade teacher, nearly a decade on the Walnut Creek School Board, 21 years on the City Council including five terms as mayor, and leadership roles on regional bodies. Darling cited Regalia’s role in securing local cultural projects and open-space protections.
Contra Costa County Supervisor Candace Anderson and a congressional staff member delivered remarks and a congressional recognition for Regalia. Anderson called Regalia “a treasure” and recounted Regalia’s mentorship to newer elected officials. Several current and former council members recalled working with Regalia, described her as a trailblazer for women in local government, and thanked her family for sharing her service with the community.
Family members were invited forward for a photo with the council; the council noted that the county Board of Supervisors would adjourn in Regalia’s honor at its next meeting. The agenda then moved to the remainder of the evening’s business.
