Koochiching County commissioners approve routine claims, licenses and several highway and equipment actions

At its Nov. 25 meeting the Koochiching County Board of Commissioners approved claims and licenses, accepted timber-auction results, authorized staff to begin MnDOT permitting for a snowmobile-trail reroute, approved a $414,972 grader purchase and signed off on a radio relocation to the new dispatch center funded from 9-1-1 funds.
Koochiching County commissioners met Tuesday and voted through a series of routine and operational items, approving courthouse, highway and public health claims, multiple 2026 business licenses, and a warrant void related to an outdoor advertising purchase.
The board accepted an informational report on the county’s Nov. 5 timber auction. Staff said 20 tracts were offered and 18 sold, for just under 26,000 cords and a total auction value of about $809,000; Aspen prices averaged about $36.05 per cord, a modest rise from prior sales.
On transportation matters the board approved a resolution to act as sponsor for the City of Big Falls’ Local Road Improvement Program funding request. Commissioners were told the LRIP deadline is in December and that the program is competitive.
The board also authorized staff to begin a permitting process with the Minnesota Department of Transportation so the Snowmobile Club can seek use of MnDOT right-of-way after a private property cutoff affected an existing connector. County staff said they will return to the board when a permit is ready for approval.
In other business, the board approved the renewal of a children’s mental-health screening grant with the Minnesota Department of Human Services (a biennial renewal required to accept funds), and approved a small amendment to site-attendant contracts to cover higher liability insurance costs (an increase of roughly $300 per attendant, $2,100 total across contracts). Commissioners noted the contracts will be rebid in 2026.
The meeting included routine procedural approvals — the meeting agenda and Oct. 28 minutes were adopted — and ended with an announcement that the next regular meeting will be Dec. 9 at 4:30 p.m., followed by the county’s 2026 budget and truth-in-taxation hearing at 6 p.m. in the historic courtroom.
