Monrovia approves $210,000 to help repair high school pool, city and school district to formalize reimbursement agreement

The Monrovia City Council voted Dec. 16 to approve a reimbursement agreement that will provide $210,000 to the Monrovia Unified School District for repairs to the high school swimming pool.

City Manager Dylan Feek told the council the district’s immediate repair estimate is roughly $343,000 and the city’s payment is intended to remove and replace pool plaster, address small perimeter decking repairs and bring the facility into compliance with Los Angeles County Department of Public Health notices. Feek said the work will restore the pool “in as-is condition” and that the agreement runs through Dec. 31, 2030.

At the meeting resident Karen DeClue thanked the council for supporting the facility but cautioned the repairs were “a band aid solution” and would not restore the pool for the long term. “It is gonna buy us a few years of kids not having to be bussed to Citrus College in Duarte,” DeClue said.

Feek told council members the city and district expect to negotiate a separate shared-use agreement in the new year to define when and how the public may use the pool during non-school hours. He said the district is “very open to” city use but that staff wanted to complete construction and reopen the pool before finalizing shared-use details.

The motion to approve CC9 was made and seconded during the consent calendar; the council approved the item without further discussion.

What’s next: staff said it will return with shared-use terms for council review and that construction work is already underway to meet public-health compliance.
