LAFAYETTE, Colo. — The Lafayette City Historic Preservation Commission on Dec. 15 approved its 2026 meeting calendar and a series of additions to local historic districts, including several city-owned properties, while tabling a mural certificate-of-appropriateness (CFA) application until January.
The commission’s acting vice president opened the meeting and noted that Commissioner John Burns was absent because he was "sick." Commissioners first approved minutes from the Sept. 29, 2025 meeting and then voted to adopt a calendar that schedules regular commission meetings on the fourth Monday of each month rather than the last Monday.
At the request of the District Committee, commissioners approved renaming the existing Saint Mary’s, 1116 Columbia Street Historic District to the Saint Mary’s Lower Columbia Historic District to prepare for the addition of a nearby property. The commission then voted to add 1104 Columbia Street — identified in the record as the Hahn Grover House and whose owner, Josie Toller, is cited as cooperative — to the renamed district.
Commissioners also recommended creation of a new Erie Street Historic District encompassing the former Biggs Pump Factory; staff noted the project materials show the site mapped on Brown Street. The commission voted to approve that recommendation.
The commission approved adding the Long Center at 111 North 6th Street (the former Mars Theater, a city-owned building) to the Upper Main historic district and adding City Hall at 20 North 6th Street to the downtown historic district; commissioners noted portions of City Hall date from the 1950s with a rear addition from about 1995.
Staff announced that the CFA application for a new mural on the side of the Wanderlust building was being tabled because the application had not been signed by the building owner. "We are tabling the CFA application. We didn't get the application signed by the building owner in time," staff member Michael said; he told the commission the item will be brought back in January after staff obtains the owner’s signature.
Michael also outlined how the city council process will work for district additions: "Every one of these has to go with city council to become an ordinance, has to go through two readings," he said, and recommended submitting multiple items together so first and second readings can occur in consecutive months (targeting March and April) to avoid scheduling confusion.
No members of the public offered comments. The commission adjourned after a motion and voice vote.
