House honors Explosivas de Moca after comeback title, delegates urge greater equity for women’s sport

The House of Representatives of Puerto Rico on Nov. 18 honored the Explosivas de Moca women’s basketball team after their championship victory, reading a motion recounting the team’s comeback and naming standout players. The chamber held a ceremonial recognition in the hemicycle and members from several delegations offered congratulations and remarks urging continued investment in women’s sport.
Representative Adriana Gutiérrez Colón of the Independence Party told the chamber: "No hay mayor reconocimiento para atletas, para las mujeres en el deporte, que aquel que se traduzca en verdadera equidad y justicia salarial y justicia en condiciones laborales para nuestras mujeres deportistas y atletas." Representative Estrella Martínez Soto (Popular Democratic Party) said the delegation has pursued legislation to elevate support for women’s sport and urged that the recognition be accompanied by concrete resources.
The official motion read by a member of the floor recounted the Explosivas’ rebound from a 3–1 deficit to win the decisive seventh game 78–69 at Coliseo Doctor Juan Sánchez Acevedo and named key contributors, including Samantha Fur (credited in the reading with 22 points and 13 rebounds) and Leisha Brown (named season MVP in the record). Members thanked the team, its technical staff and apoderados and noted the championship’s cultural and civic significance for Moca and the region.
Apoderado Andros Álvarez addressed the House, thanked Representatives Odaly and Wilson for their support and described resource constraints facing the women’s league while pledging work to keep growing the franchise. The chamber invited players, coaches and club representatives to the estrado for the recognition and a photograph with members.
What’s next: Members called for continued legislative and executive branch attention to equity in sports funding and support for women athletes; the recognition was ceremonial and did not include any binding budget action. The session resumed other legislative business after the photo and closed on the day’s votes.
