Summary
Following the swearing-in of new leadership, Daly City presented awards recognizing businesses, community organizations, educators and students, highlighting a year of public-safety, infrastructure and cultural events including a Top of the Hill Festival that drew more than 20,000 people.
After the council completed its reorganization votes on Dec. 9, outgoing Mayor Rod Das Magdwal presented a series of community awards recognizing businesses, nonprofit groups, educators and youth for contributions during 2025.
Awards highlighted economic and cultural activity across Daly City. Chell Guia of Chilog's received the Outstanding Citizen award for entrepreneurship and workforce development; Classic Bowling Center accepted the Community Legacy Business Award with owner Matt Devincenzi calling the center "a family business" that has served the community for more than four decades. The council also recognized Pacific Islanders Together, the Westlake School of the Performing Arts, Seafood City Market, and recipients in youth and staff categories including Kaylee Chu (youth poet laureate), Amyanda Megbo (student leader) and employee of the year Alofaga Tagaloa from the Department of Water and Wastewater Resources.
In his remarks, Das Magdwal summarized key 2025 accomplishments that framed the awards: a new police real-time intelligence center, a fire-department average response time of 5 minutes, 27 seconds, completion of a $6,500,000 Mussel Rock seawall project, nearly 200,000 library visitors, and securing $1,360,000 for after-school programs serving more than 800 youth. Council members and award recipients emphasized community service and cross-generational engagement as central to the year's achievements.
The council recessed briefly for a reception and reconvened to complete the awards portion of the ceremony; no policy votes were taken during the awards presentations.
