Daly City recreation staff say event attendance is growing; list holiday and youth programs

Recreation Services Manager Romeo Benson told the Daly City Recreation Commission on Oct. 28 that the department’s special and community events have seen steady growth and broadened participation.
Benson summarized three classes of programming—cultural celebrations, community events and markets—and listed recent highlights including Frosty Snowfest (December), the Feb. Black History Month celebration, Spring Fun Day, Children’s Day, Hip Hop Day and Casayahan/Kasayahan. He said attendance has increased year over year, volunteer engagement and vendor interest have grown, and events "do more than entertain. They build community, encourage volunteerism, and support local businesses," according to his presentation.
Staff provided some attendance estimates: Benson said staff approximated about 2,800 participants at the recent trunk‑or‑treat event. In later remarks staff described Kasayahan peaking at about 12,000 people and Top of the Hill at about 16,000, while also noting those figures are preliminary and will be updated after post‑event debriefs. Commissioners raised a shuttle logistics concern for Top of the Hill—some riders were directed to a stop that required a steep walk to reach the actual shuttle location; staff said they will follow up at a scheduled debrief.
Upcoming events announced by staff included a pancake brunch and craft fair/holiday market on Nov. 15 (Pacelli Event Center/Westlake Park; pancake brunch 9 a.m.–1 p.m.; tickets: $10 for Daly City residents, $12.50 nonresidents; craft fair free admission 10 a.m.–4 p.m.) and Frosty Snowfest on Dec. 6 (4–7 p.m., free) in collaboration with the Ceremony shopping center. Commissioner Ortiz also described a youth Infinity 3x3 invitational—hosted in partnership with Hoop Bus and In The Lab—for the coming Saturday at Westlake/Pacelli.
Benson and commissioners emphasized accessibility goals for 2026—adding multigenerational programming, further inclusivity and improved event logistics such as parking and shuttle information. Commissioners thanked staff and volunteers and recognized community partners for their contributions. The commission had no public comments and concluded the meeting with routine approvals and adjournment.
