Bonney Lake Elementary's Kindness Crew described weekly kindness challenges, World Kindness Day activities and a monthly Change for Change fundraiser; the Sumner School District board recognized the students and adviser and presented small tokens of appreciation.
Bonney Lake Elementary students were recognized at the Sumner School District board meeting on Nov. 18 for their "Kindness Crew" leadership in promoting small acts of kindness across the school.
Principal Lianne Alfano introduced the group and their adviser, Dawn Isaacson, saying the program is a voluntary leadership effort open to any student who wants to help spread kindness. Students described initiatives including Thursday announcement challenges, Kindnessgrams at recess, World Kindness Day notes left around the building, and a monthly Change for Change drive with the PTA to select a local charity to receive donations.
"The Kindness Crew was created to inspire all of us to spread kindness and care throughout our school and community," a fifth-grade member said. Adviser Dawn Isaacson told the board the crew met after a summer training and focused on small, repeatable acts that lift students and staff.
Board members thanked the students and their adult helpers and presented carved heart tokens and other small gifts as tokens of appreciation. District leaders said the program helps broaden students' leadership experiences and connects school activities with community support.
The board acknowledged the group during the recognition portion of the meeting and then moved on to routine business.
