Charleston County recommends four for library board after wide field of applicants

Charleston County Council on Dec. 9 reviewed multiple applicants for the Charleston County Public Library Board of Trustees and forwarded four names to the full county council for appointment consideration.

Louise Anderson Allen and Kyle Oman, both seeking reappointment, described their prior service and roles on the trustees and finance committee. "Books have always been the center of my life," Allen said while asking members for another term. Oman cited four years of work on the library finance committee and close collaboration with the library executive staff.

Candidates who addressed the council also included Dr. Everett Platt, who described more than 20 years in literacy development and community-based learning, and Mike Lyons, a Mount Pleasant resident who pointed to prior school-board leadership and archives experience. Other applicants who spoke included Julianne Farnsworth, Kenneth Burt and Dennis Karth, the latter urging the board to plan for future challenges including artificial intelligence and changes in access.

Council conducted a roll-call ballot for four seats and the recommendation forwarded to the county council meeting was: Louise Allen, Kyle Oman, Everett Platt and Riley (name as recorded). The recommendation will be considered at the subsequent county council meeting for final appointment.

The session also included procedural clarifications about committee recommendations: where an appointment comes out of committee, council members were reminded they must vote the committee recommendation and cannot amend the slate on the council floor.

Council returned nominations and recommendations to the county council for final action; no formal appointments were finalized at tonight’s meeting.
