Murrieta shifts aquatics program to Vista High School; staff report rising participation and operational changes

City recreation staff gave the commission a summary of the 2025 aquatics season after relocating programming from Kellogg Sports Park to Murrieta Vista High School.
Recreation Supervisor Victor Patino said the program ran June 7 through Sept. 28 and offered swim lessons, public swim and lap swim. The city contracted Swan Aquatics to provide lifeguards and instructors. Patino said the program recorded about 3,300 participant visits and a 66% year-over-year increase in registration for swim lessons compared with the previous baseline year.
Daily admissions ranged from $1 to $5, with seasonal passes priced at $20 for residents and $40 for nonresidents. Patino credited improved marketing — social media, signage at high schools and banners — and operational changes such as consolidated lesson blocks for smoothing participant flow.
He also noted some vendor-related customer-service hiccups early in the season that were addressed in a debrief and that staff plan to revise customer-communication expectations and coordinate earlier preseason operations with the school district. For 2026 he said staff hope to expand operations from four to six days per week and to hire two to three standby staff to ensure adequate lifeguard coverage.
Commissioners praised the partnership with the school district and asked staff to continue coordination and consider extending the season and marketing timeline to begin earlier in spring.
