Finance Committee weighs AB Forward school reconfiguration and potential budget impacts

Committee members emphasized a core fact in all four remaining options: the Conant School building would close. Speaker 2 said the plan would move about 450 students next year and noted that the remaining options differ substantially in how they reassign grade bands and specialty staff.
Parents at AB Forward meetings, especially those identified as Conant, Merriam and McCarthy Towne parents, raised concerns that merging or rebanding schools could erode school identity and community cohesion. "Our community is more than a school. It's more than a building," Speaker 2 said during the meeting.
Committee members debated whether the Finance Committee should perform a scenario analysis now or wait for the school committee's narrowed decision. Speaker 1 proposed preparing several financial scenarios, using the schools' existing projections, to produce a baseline that the town could analyze before Town Meeting. Speaker 3 urged caution and recommended waiting until early January when the school committee will have initial budget details; the school committee has scheduled a public hearing for Jan. 8 and a final vote for Jan. 22.
The committee agreed to prioritize liaison summaries and to produce an executive synopsis of the AB Forward options ahead of the next meeting so members can better understand the fiscal trade-offs and timing of any savings or one-time costs.
The meeting closed with the committee scheduling follow-up work and awaiting school committee budget numbers.
