Alvin Independent School District observed its centennial at Tuesday’s board meeting with a mix of ceremony and community recognitions.
State Representative Jeff Berry presented a resolution honoring the district’s 100 years of service, citing historical milestones and noting the resolution’s statement that the district currently serves nearly 30,000 students across 34 campuses. Berry thanked district leaders and community members and offered the resolution as a public commemoration.
The meeting included musical and student presentations: younger students led the Pledge of Allegiance, Iowa Colony High School’s choir performed a multi‑song Christmas mashup for meeting attendees and the board recognized holiday‑card contest winners from multiple campuses.
Trustees also honored student athletes invited to the Navy All‑American Bowl and UIL cross‑country qualifiers. The board gave special recognition to McNair Junior High staff members — nurse Joanna Guzman, Officer Dennis Hernandez and Truman Boyle — for their response to a student medical emergency on the field; the family requested the recognition and speakers credited the staff with saving the student’s life.
Board members closed the ceremony portion by thanking students, coaches, teachers and families for representing Alvin ISD in academics, arts and athletics.
The centennial resolution and the recognitions were presented as ceremonial items rather than votes affecting district policy.
