Board approves minutes and AMS field trip contract amid member objections over minutes and superintendent buyout clause
Summary
The Asheville City Schools board approved Nov. 3 and Nov. 10 minutes after debate over whether minutes 'cherry picked' comments and whether a newly added no‑cause buyout to the superintendent's contract should be described as a compensation change; the board also approved the AMS field trip contract with Young Transportation unanimously.

During the meeting the board took up three items pulled from the consent agenda: the work session minutes of Nov. 3, 2025; the regular meeting minutes of Nov. 10, 2025; and the Asheville Middle School (AMS) field trip contract with Young Transportation.
Board member Pepe Acebo requested that the Nov. 3 minutes be pulled for discussion, saying the draft "cherry picked" conversation and omitted parts of a prior direction to send detailed questions to the superintendent. Acebo said some of his questions led to staff action on compliance issues and that the minutes should reflect those concerns. The chair and other board members responded that minutes are intended to reflect board decisions rather than full remarks; after discussion the board voted to approve the Nov. 3 work session minutes.
Acebo also objected to wording in the Nov. 10 minutes that said "the contract was extended with no overall changes to the compensation package," asserting a material change had been made: the addition of a "no‑cause buyout" tied to compensation through the contract term. Other board members said a buyout clause is not the same as changing compensation and that the minutes reasonably summarized the board's decision; the board then voted to approve the Nov. 10 minutes with a recorded opposition.
Separately, the board considered the AMS field trip contract for transportation with Young Transportation. The chair clarified that the consent hyperlink had been confusing and that the single contract for a field trip is the item for vote. Speaker 3 moved to approve the AMS field trip contract; the motion was seconded, and the board approved it unanimously.
At the meeting's end the board voted to enter closed session citing attorney‑client privileged matters and personnel confidentiality under the statutes cited on the record. The meeting then moved into closed session.
