Audit committee reviews 2025 Clery Act campus safety report

Doctor Sharush Vukwar, vice president for finance and administration, presented Austin Peay State University's 2025 Clery Act annual security and fire safety report to the audit committee, describing the report as a federal requirement under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
Vukwar said the report is intended to provide transparency about campus safety by documenting crimes reported on or near campus and outlining security policies and procedures. He said compliance with the Clery Act ties to federal funding and that the report helps the university identify trends and allocate resources.
On crime trends, Vukwar said incidents are "random and without pattern" and that some year-over-year increases reflect population growth that increases occurrences. He explained why direct comparisons with other institutions are difficult: Clery reporting is geographic, so incidents that occur on nearby public streets but within the university perimeter can be included, and institutional demographic and location differences complicate apples-to-apples comparisons. Chief of Police Christy Winters joined Vukwar to answer questions.
A trustee asked whether the university compares Clery data to similar institutions; Vukwar said it is difficult to do strict comparisons and that it is more practical to compare by metropolitan size. The committee accepted the report as information; no action was taken.
