Board approves policy changes, class-size waivers, construction contract and personnel items
Summary
At its Nov. 18 session the Appoquinimink board adopted revised holiday-leave policy 3108, approved two K–3 class-size waivers, approved construction contract 31A for Summit Campus site work, several overnight trips, internal accounts and personnel reports, and approved minutes from prior meetings.
The Appoquinimink School District board approved a number of routine and governance items on Nov. 18, including a personnel report, policy updates, class-size waivers and a construction contract.
Policy: The board adopted a revised policy 3108 (holiday leaves and absences) on its second reading. Dr. Small explained revisions that update accrual and usage language, increase the personal-day allowance tied to sick leave and adjust documentation thresholds for illness. Motion to adopt was made by Mr. Abrams and seconded by Dr. Graham; the board voted to approve.
Minutes and reports: The board approved the Oct. 7, 2025 meeting minutes and the Oct. 28, 2025 workshop minutes (with two abstentions noted because those members had not attended the workshop). The internal accounts report for September 2025 and the monthly financial report for September 2025 (FAC-recommended) were also approved.
Class-size waivers: The board approved two class-size waivers for K–3 classrooms: one at Cedar Lane Early Childhood Center (kindergarten classroom over ratio by 1 student) and one at Townsend Elementary (third-grade classroom over ratio by 2 students). Dr. Small explained that students who arrive after class assignments are established often remain in their assigned classrooms rather than be moved, which is one practical reason waivers are requested.
Contracts, trips and personnel: The board approved several overnight field trips (final approval for trip IDs 10302, 10360, 10575, 10766; preliminary approval for trip ID 11116) and approved construction contract 31A (Summit Campus site work), which Mr. Hopkins reported came in slightly under budget. The personnel report — including names discussed in executive session — was approved.
