SANDY, Utah — The Canyons Board of Education voted to pause the district’s proposed 90‑day closure process and expand analysis of feeder patterns after extensive public comment and trustee discussion.
At a study‑session update, Leon Wilcox, the district business administrator, described a plan to “recalibrate” the boundary study to assess secondary feeders and the longer‑term consequences of consolidation decisions. Wilcox said the district will extend outreach and incorporate updated projections, including recent ZIP‑code birth data and open‑enrollment figures, and that public hearings originally scheduled in January will be reset to honor required notice windows.
Public commenters, including Jared Herbert, principal of Granite Elementary and president of the Canyons Association of Elementary School Principals, urged more transparency and said the district should not move before completing the studies. Herbert asked: “How did the district propose closing schools before completing the very studies you now say are necessary to justify those closures?”
Parents and community speakers — citing enrollment projections and upcoming housing developments — urged the board to consider growth scenarios and equity impacts. Several trustees said they supported pausing to give staff time to examine SPED placements, feeder impacts and possible school replacement planning. Others expressed concern about extending uncertainty for affected families and asked for faster community input options, such as targeted surveys or earlier meetings with the Granite community.
Board members discussed options including advancing the Granite‑Quail Hollow consolidation to community input sooner while delaying deliberation on the Park Lane / Willow Canyon area, or holding both for further study. Multiple trustees asked staff to return with clearer fiscal implications, SPED placement options and an outreach plan that includes teachers, administrators and families.
Next steps: staff will expand the scope of the boundary review, schedule additional outreach, and bring refined proposals and timelines to the board in early 2026 for further action.
