The Angola Historic Preservation Commission voted to approve a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior repainting and two new round signs at 218 West Maumee Street during its Nov. 19 meeting.
Staff told the commission the applicant proposes to repaint wood paneling and hang two 3-foot diameter signs, using a Sherwin‑Williams historic exterior palette. "The color proposed is rockwood jade from the Sherwin Williams historic exterior pallet," staff said, and identified the paint code as SW2812. Staff noted the signs will attach into wood rather than brick or mortar and that no lighting (neon or LED) is proposed. "As far as the signage goes, that does fall within our criteria," staff stated, and recommended approval: "I do recommend approval for the certificate of appropriateness for the proposed project." The report also reminded the applicant that a city sign permit must be obtained.
Casey Pena, who introduced himself to the commission as "co-owner of Maniac Construction and president of Kahoots Community Center," answered questions from the panel and confirmed the work is limited to painted wood panels. Pena said the existing paint is weathered — "It's been on there 25 years" — and described other deferred maintenance on the building that would be considered under separate permits at a later date.
Commissioners moved and seconded approval of the application "as is." The transcript records members answering "Aye" and the chair stating the COA was approved; a roll-call tally was not recorded in the transcript.
Next steps: staff will advise the applicant on sign‑permit requirements and the applicant may return for future permits if they propose material replacement or window restoration.
The commission’s approval applies only to the repainting and the two signs as presented at the meeting; any changes to materials, attachment methods into masonry, or lighting would require further review.
