The Metro Human Relations Commission voted unanimously to approve a $1,500 sponsorship to Southern Word to support its Youth Poet Laureate program and associated events.
Staff described the program as a recurring annual contest that draws high-school-aged spoken-word poets and offers finalists stipends and public-speaking opportunities. "That helps in numerous ways," staff said, listing venue, food and stipends as uses for the funds. The commission aired a few questions about the stipend size and scope; staff said the $1,500 includes some stipend funding and that they would confirm the exact stipend amount at the next meeting.
Commissioners approved the sponsorship by voice vote; the staff said the grant package will proceed to council for appropriation as required by municipal process.
