Town Administrator Gary Neece told the Carefree Town Council Nov. 4 that he plans to retire in March after 24 years with the town.
Council members and residents publicly thanked Neece for long service, crediting him with helping build the town’s financial reserves and oversee investments in roads, water capacity, fire resources and staff. A speaker said the town has "more money in the bank than ever" and praised infrastructure and staff hiring during Neece’s tenure.
Neece, speaking to the council, thanked the mayor, council and residents for their support and described the decision to step back as an opportunity to spend more time with family and consider private-sector work. He called town staff "dedicated" and praised the teamwork he said enabled the town's accomplishments.
At the same meeting, members of the public used the open-comment period to praise recent neighborhood paving work, promote a Jan. 11 'Orphans and Oddballs' car show and ask the council to study restrictions on gas-powered leaf blowers and the town’s livestream practices. Another speaker raised questions about proposed town-hall redevelopment costs and an open-meeting complaint from an earlier meeting.
Neece’s retirement timetable gives the town several months to plan a transition; the council did not announce a successor at the meeting.
