Executive director Christy Hart described Veterans Week events across Cherry Creek schools, including Quilts of Valor, an honor bell tradition, partnerships with Buckley Space Force Base and field trips to the Center for American Values.
Executive director Christy Hart told the Cherry Creek board on Dec. 8 that Veterans Week involved 100% school participation in some form of celebration across the district and highlighted community partnerships that support students and veterans.
Hart described Quilts of Valor ceremonies conducted twice yearly, outreach by volunteer quiltmakers, and the district tradition of tolling an honor bell at athletic pregame ceremonies in remembrance of veterans. She said the honor bell contains artifacts and dog tags from Colorado veterans and recounted tolling the bell for "Nurse Patty," a Vietnam veteran and community advocate for veterans' PTSD supports.
Hart also described partnerships with the Center for American Values in Pueblo and with Buckley Space Force Base to support students from military families, noting the district’s counseling and mental-health teams help ease transitions for students who move in or out of the district.
The presentation included a short video of Veterans Week events and Hart thanked volunteers, staff and board members for supporting the district’s recognition of service.
"We just wrapped up Veterans Week, but we have opportunities to support and celebrate our veterans and our partnerships with veterans organizations all year," Hart said.
