The Farmers Branch Historical Preservation Board approved a living-history award recipient and reviewed materials for the board—s annual City Council presentation, while also discussing event scheduling and concerns about the venue—s operations and revenue tracking.
Speaker 1 moved that Claire be accepted as the 50-year living-history award recipient; the motion was seconded and the board responded "All in favor," with the transcript indicating five in favor. The board also discussed a business recipient (Pete's Cafe), with staff agreeing to collect more historical detail for the council packet. Speaker 3 said the witness-to-history presentation is tentatively scheduled for the City Council meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 6:00 p.m., and that related materials must be in the city system by Jan. 21 to appear on a February council agenda if needed.
Board members reviewed the year-in-review slides, which summarize membership, an 84% attendance rate and community programs the board supported, including Gateway to the Globe, Mad Hatter Tea, Coffee with a Cop, Independence Day activities, school tours and summer camps. Speaker 3 noted Friends of the Farmers Branch Historical Park (a 501(c)(3)) has raised several thousand dollars to support collections care and cemetery preservation.
The board heard event and calendar updates: tickets/summer-camp registration open Dec. 1; a Christmas carnival is scheduled for Dec. 6 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. (the program will include a drone show); and the Wreaths Across America ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 13 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kenan/Cunanan cemetery, with donations secured so wreaths will cover veterans' graves.
Members also asked how the event center (Venue 1842) is being managed after staff transitions and whether the city receives revenue for outside rentals. Speaker 3 said she will update the tracking spreadsheet and provide counts and revenue figures at a future meeting so the board can review how many events are city-sponsored versus paid rentals.
The board closed the meeting by confirming calendar items (no December board meeting; next regular meeting Jan. 22) and reminding members of a board chairs— strategic-planning discussion Jan. 13 at City Hall.
