The Durham Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to extend Superintendent Dr. Anthony Lewis’s contract by one year and approved a one-time $2,500 annuity contribution and 40 hours of compensatory time.
Board member Sarah Goss made the motion to extend Lewis’s contract by one year, including the $2,500 annuity contribution and 40 hours of comp time; the motion was seconded and passed without opposition. Chair Harold Goff and several board members cited a recent comprehensive evaluation, growth in student outcomes, and leadership through transportation and budgetary challenges in explaining their votes.
Community members and board members praised Lewis during the public meeting for campus engagement and for overseeing improvements in many schools, including comments that 90% of Durham Public Schools experienced growth last year and that more schools earned A–C grades than since the pandemic. Lewis thanked the board for its confidence and emphasized his commitment to removing barriers to improve student achievement.
The board recorded no amendments or conditions to the extension during the public meeting. The personnel item was added to the agenda after the board modified the consent calendar earlier in the session.
