The Garrard County Board of Education opened its meeting with tributes to three retiring educators and recognition of a student archery team.
Colleagues and students offered personal remarks to Amy Floyd, praising her 27 years of service and advocacy for students. Multiple speakers said she “cares about her students” and that “they are greatly going to miss her.”
Band director Chris Vance received multiple tributes from students and staff who described him as inspirational and credited him with strengthening music and performing-arts programs at Garrard County High School. One speaker said Vance had been “an uplifting person” and that the band was a “great asset to Garrard County.”
Joy Arnold, a music teacher and specials-team leader, was praised for classroom engagement, summer music camps and leading students to regional choir events; colleagues called her “music in Garrard County” and invited her to return after retirement.
The board also recognized the Kent Robinson archery team for placing seventh out of 96 teams at the state tournament and qualifying for the national tournament and world championship in Myrtle Beach, with plans to take a group of archers to represent the district.
Board chair and district leaders presented videos and remarks honoring the retirees and reminded attendees that district policy prevents immediately re-hiring retirees for 90 days following retirement. The tributes preceded the meeting’s business agenda and were followed by routine consent and action items.
