The Wausau Waterworks Commission voted Dec. 2 to recommend that the city council approve a reimbursement resolution intended to let the city use 2026 Safe Drinking Water loan and principal-forgiveness funds to reimburse lead-service-line replacement work.
Staff said the DNR submitted a draft allocation totaling $18,979,000 for the city, with about $11,000,000 identified as potential principal forgiveness and the remainder as a loan (staff said final DNR numbers are pending). The draft resolution is procedural: it allows the city to be reimbursed for eligible work performed before final loan documents are completed and is a standard step in the Safe Drinking Water and Clean Water Fund loan process.
Director Eric said the loan will be structured with a revenue bond and a general-obligation bond component, then proceed to council for signature once finance completes its review. The commission voted to recommend approval to the finance committee (meeting Dec. 9) and then to council in January.
Commissioner Hadley moved the motion; a second was recorded and the commission approved the recommendation by voice vote. The transcript records ayes and no opposed voices, but does not include a numerical roll-call tally.
Staff emphasized that final loan and forgiveness figures must be confirmed by DNR and that the resolution merely enables the city to seek reimbursement for eligible 2026 work once funding terms are finalized.
