The Yorktown Central School District board on Dec. 15 heard details on new electives and the district’s expanding approach to student supports.
A speaker identified new and proposed courses and said some offerings began this year after student requests. "Raising Asian Voices," proposed last year by Lauren Soo Hoo, started this fall with about 10 students (one withdrew), and a business entrepreneurship elective scheduled for next semester already has roughly 30 students and a wait list, the presenter said. A social‑studies‑based course called "Historical Inquiry and Innovation" is under review and would culminate in a history fair focused on civic skills.
Board members asked about a new personal finance requirement in learning‑standards updates; the presenter said the requirement will be phased in at the high school and eventually at middle and elementary levels.
On student supports, the district described a renewed emphasis on MTSS (multi‑tiered systems of support) at the secondary level to identify and monitor students needing academic or social‑emotional interventions, and named Marilee Marrow as the district MTSS coordinator. The presenter warned that PPS clinicians are "spread very thin" amid rising referrals.
Next steps: the identified course proposals will move through the district’s formal review process and appear in upcoming curriculum presentations to the board.
